Lawyer Test

Lawyer tests assess whether an individual has the skills and knowledge required to practice law.

  • What is a lawyer test?

Becoming a lawyer is a long and challenging process that involves years of learning and preparation. The lawyer test can help prospective employers to determine whether candidates have the right skills and competencies to work as a lawyer.

While resumes and interviews can ensure an employer has a good sense of a candidate's educational background, qualifications and character, it can be harder to assess their potential as a lawyer. That's where a lawyer test comes in — with questions designed to probe an individual's knowledge and understanding, it can help employers and recruiters to determine which people to take forward.

About the Lawyer Test

A lawyer helps advise clients on all aspects of the law and provides legal counsel during cases in court.

Using a lawyer test can give employers an indication of candidates' potential to practice law. It can help provide employers with an in-depth understanding of exactly where a candidate's strengths and weaknesses lie, and whether they're likely to be a good fit for the position you're hiring for.

  • Why should you use a lawyer test for recruiting?

Lawyer tests assess general understanding of laws and legal practice, as well as how capable the individual is at keeping calm under pressure – a vital skill for any lawyer.

Recruiters should consider using a lawyer test as part of their recruitment process. Not only can it provide a fairer and more objective perspective of the candidates they're reviewing, but it will also give a better understanding of exactly where each person's strengths, weaknesses and skills lie.

Lawyer tests can be used when hiring for the following roles:

    • Solicitor
    • Roles that require legal knowledge or understanding
    • Legal internships or graduate schemes
    • Procurement roles

How our test assesses lawyer skills

Candidates will need to answer a range of questions that measure industry-specific soft skills where applicable (e.g. interpersonal skills), aptitude (e.g. verbal reasoning) and relevant personality dimensions (e.g. compassion). The results present a holistic view of how well suited each candidate is for the job at hand, using a data-driven approach.

The format varies by type of question, including multiple-choice for aptitude and technical skills, situational judgement for soft skills and agreement on a Likert scale for the personality dimensions. This approach ensures candidates are being assessed in an accurate and fair manner, and that results reflect the true underlying qualities of each candidate.

The characteristics, abilities and knowledge necessary to be a lawyer were identified using the US Department of Labor's comprehensive O*NET database. O*NET is the leading source of occupational information that is constantly updated by collecting data from employees in specific job roles.

During the development process, test questions were rigorously analysed to maximise reliability and validity in line with industry best practices. They were created by our team of I/O psychologists and psychometricians – who collaborated with subject-matter-experts – and field-tested with a representative sample of job applicants who have varying experience, just like you might find in a talent pool.

Each test is reviewed by a panel of individuals representing diverse backgrounds to check for any sensitivity, fairness, face validity and accessibility issues. This ensures each candidate has a fair chance of demonstrating their true level of expertise.

Our lawyer test is monitored to ensure it is up-to-date and optimised for performance.
