Numerical Reasoning Tests

Numerical reasoning tests are designed to examine how adept candidates are at dealing with a range of different mathematical problems under tight time conditions.

  • What is a numerical reasoning test?

The numerical reasoning test will assess candidates on everything from equations and sums, to data interpretation and graph reading.

  • Why do employers use numerical reasoning tests?

Employers will be looking to see how comfortable a candidate is with basic mathematical principles, and how well they keep calm under pressure. Part of the recruitment process for jobs requiring a certain amount of mathematical skill, the test will help employers to identify candidates with a particular strength for data interpretation and quick calculations.

  • What is the format of a numerical reasoning test?

Candidates will be required to answer 20 questions in 20 minutes, whatever the level of complexity of the test.

  • Which skills are tested on the numerical reasoning test?

The test assesses an individual's understanding of basic mathematical principles such as ratios, fractions and percentages, as well as data interpretation and a proven ability to read and understand tables and graphs. Questions are often framed within commonplace business scenarios to provide relevant context for candidates.

      Are the tests difficult?

There are two levels of test: foundation and advanced. The foundation test is ideal for vocational roles, whereas the advanced test is more often used to recruit for senior and managerial positions.

How long does the numerical test last?

The numerical reasoning test typically lasts around 20 minutes, although it can be shorter. Normally, candidates can expect to have to answer one question per minute to complete everything in the test in the allotted time.

Are these tests available in my plan?

Yes! Whichever plan you select, you'll be able to see the full range of test levels. The only difference between the plans is the amount of tests you're permitted to attempt.

Can I see what the test is like?

All you need to do is click the 'view example' button to get a preview of a test. You'll be able to see a mix of foundation and advanced level questions so you get a flavour of what candidates can expect on both tests.
